Meet our attorneys

Aaron C. Garrett
Co-Founder and Executive Director
Aaron graduated from the William & Mary Law School in 2009.  While in school Aaron served as the Editor-in-Chief of the William & Mary Law Review.  For the first four years of his legal career, Aaron worked for a commercial litigation boutique law firm.  In 2013, he founded Aaron Garrett Law LLC to serve the needs of Utah's nonprofit community and also those who were otherwise unable to afford an attorney.  Aaron specializes in the law of nonprofit organizations and also has extensive experience in helping individuals solve their legal problems, including in the areas of family law, landlord/tenant disputes, collections, civil rights, First Amendment, and employment law.  Aaron graduated with a degree in Art History from the University of Southern California prior to attending law school.

Nathan Garcia
Co-Founder and Managing Director
Nathan graduated from the Seattle University School of Law in 2011. He practiced with a boutique estate and business planning law firm for nearly four years before co-founding Nonprofit Legal Services of Utah.
Nathan's experience includes estate and business planning, (including structuring charitable giving plans), civil litigation, family law, and resolving disputes in a reasonable and cost-effective manner. Nathan graduated from the University of Utah prior to attending law school.
Nathan loves to spend time outdoors with his family. He also enjoys attending sporting events.

Andrew S. Rawlings
Associate Attorney
Andy earned his juris doctorate at the University of Utah’s S.J. Quinney College of Law, graduating in 2014. He completed his undergraduate studies on Honors at Entrance and departmental scholarships at the University of Utah, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in English and French and graduating Phi Beta Kappa in 2011.  Prior to joining Nonprofit Legal Services of Utah, Andy practiced as a family law and personal injury attorney with Fontenot Law for a year. While in law school he worked as law clerk to then-Solicitor General of Utah, Bridget Romano, in the civil appellate division of the Utah Attorney General’s Office while moonlighting as a junior sports editor at the Salt Lake Tribune.  In his free time, he enjoys singing, weightlifting, and quoting all the lines from his favorite movies and HBO’s ‘Veep’.

Sydney Mateus
Associate Attorney
Sydney graduated from the University of Utah's  S.J. Quinney College of Law in 2015. She began working in the legal field in 2007, learning as much as possible about all aspects of the judicial system. During law school, Sydney interned with the Rocky Mountain Innocence Center and Salt Lake Legal Defender Association, providing representation to individuals exposed to varying phases of the justice system. Before joining Nonprofit Legal Services of Utah, Sydney was employed at a small firm that specialized in civil rights and family law. She graduated from the University of Utah with a degree in Sociology and Criminology certificate prior to attending law school. You'll find Sydney in the mountains with her dogs whenever she has free time, unless there is a Utes football or Real Salt Lake game on.
